Clostridioides difficile (also known as C. diff) is a bacterium that causes diarrhea and colitis (an inflammation of the colon). Each year more than half a million Americans are diagnosed with a C. diff infection and nearly 29,000 die from it. 1 in 5 people who are treated for C. diff will get the infection again. Beyond the awful physical symptoms that can include diarrhea, fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite and nausea, many people with C. diff are unable to work, care for their family or enjoy their daily activities.
This November and December, you can make a difference in the fight against C. diff infections, by being a Champion for those afflicted. You can raise money through social media and by email, by hosting a Zoom Happy Hour or Dance Party, or committing to do a run/walk. Whatever you choose to do, you will be a Champion for the hundreds of thousands of Americans who battle C. diff each year.
November is C. diff Awareness Month! It’s a unique opportunity to share information about this preventable but potentially deadly disease so others “See C. diff.” Despite it causing more deaths each year than HIV, only 1/3 of Americans have heard of C. diff. By joining PLF’s C. diff Champions Campaign, you not only raise money but also critical awareness. We hear constantly from C. diff sufferers and family members who wish they’d heard of C. diff before they were diagnosed.
This year, we’ll be running the challenge starting September 1 and through the end of 2021. We want people to have as much time as they need to raise money and awareness of C. diff as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
